Mutual funds
The basics of investing through mutual funds. Mutual fund investments are subject to market risks.
What is a mutual fund?
A mutual fund pools money from many investors and invests it in shares, bonds or other securities according to a stated objective. Professional fund managers run each scheme, and you own units whose value follows the scheme's Net Asset Value (NAV). Read more on our mutual funds page.
Do mutual funds guarantee returns?
No. Mutual fund investments are subject to market risks, and no scheme can guarantee returns. Read all scheme related documents carefully before investing, and remember that past performance may or may not be sustained in the future.
How do I know which mutual fund suits me?
It depends on your goal, your time horizon and how comfortable you are with a fall in value. We start with those three questions and then discuss the categories that fit, before looking at individual schemes.
What is the difference between direct and regular plans?
Both invest in the same portfolio. A regular plan is bought through a distributor, and its expense ratio includes the cost of distribution, from which the distributor's commission is paid. A direct plan is bought without a distributor and generally has a lower expense ratio. Ask about costs before you decide, and we will explain them.
What is KYC and why do I need it?
KYC, or Know Your Customer, is an identity verification requirement for investing in mutual funds. It usually involves your PAN, proof of address, a photograph and bank details, and it is generally completed once.
When can I withdraw my money?
Open-ended schemes generally allow you to redeem units on any business day. Some schemes have an exit load or a lock-in period, and tax may apply on gains. Check the scheme documents, and we can point out the relevant terms.
SIP
Questions about investing regularly through a Systematic Investment Plan.
What is a SIP?
A Systematic Investment Plan lets you invest a fixed amount in a mutual fund scheme at regular intervals, usually every month. The amount is debited from your bank account on the chosen date and units are allotted at that day's NAV.
Is a SIP better than a lump sum investment?
Neither is better for everyone. A SIP suits regular income and spreads your purchases across dates. A lump sum suits money that is available in one amount. We help you decide based on your situation.
Can I increase my SIP amount later?
Many schemes offer a step-up option, and you can also start an additional SIP. Availability depends on the scheme and the process followed.
What happens if my bank account has too little balance on the SIP date?
The instalment for that month is not invested, and your bank may charge a fee. Repeated failures can lead the scheme to cancel the SIP under its rules, so keep enough balance in the account before the date.
Insurance
Health, life and general insurance. Insurance is the subject matter of solicitation.
What is the difference between health insurance and life insurance?
Health insurance pays eligible medical treatment costs up to the sum insured. Life insurance pays a sum to your nominee if the insured person dies during the policy term. They serve different needs, and many families keep both. See health insurance and life insurance.
What is a waiting period in health insurance?
A waiting period is the time after a policy starts during which certain claims cannot be made. Examples are an initial waiting period, a longer period for pre-existing conditions and specific periods for named procedures. Lengths differ between plans.
What is term insurance?
Term insurance pays a fixed sum assured to the nominee if the insured person dies during the policy term. A standard term plan has no maturity benefit, and its premium is generally lower than a plan that also builds savings.
What does motor insurance cover?
Third-party cover pays for harm caused to other people and their property, and it is the legal minimum. Comprehensive cover also protects your own vehicle against events such as accidents, fire and theft, subject to the policy terms. See general insurance.
Why does accurate disclosure matter?
Insurers accept and price a policy based on the information you give. Incorrect or missing details about health, habits or how a vehicle is used can lead to a claim being reduced or rejected.
Do you decide whether my claim is paid?
No. Claims are assessed and settled by the insurer under the policy terms. We help you understand the process and prepare the documents.
MSME / Udyam
Registration for micro, small and medium enterprises on the official Udyam portal.
What is Udyam registration?
Udyam Registration is the online system through which the Government of India registers micro, small and medium enterprises. A completed registration produces an Udyam Registration Number and a certificate. See our MSME page.
Who should consider registering?
Any eligible enterprise in manufacturing or services that wants a government-recognised record may consider it. Whether it helps depends on your plans, such as applying for schemes, credit support or government tenders.
Is there a government fee for Udyam registration?
According to the official Udyam portal, registration itself is free of charge. If you use our assistance, ask us about our service charges before you proceed.
What documents do I need?
Commonly the Aadhaar of the proprietor or authorised signatory, PAN, GSTIN where applicable, enterprise details, NIC codes, investment and turnover figures and bank details. We confirm the current requirements with you.
Does registration guarantee subsidies or loans?
No. Registration may make an enterprise eligible to be considered for certain schemes, and each scheme has its own conditions.
GeM
Selling to government buyers on the Government e-Marketplace.
What is GeM?
GeM, the Government e-Marketplace, is an online platform where government buyers purchase goods and services. Sellers register on the platform and list their offerings. See our GeM services page.
Who can register as a seller?
Manufacturers, service providers, traders and other suppliers can register, subject to GeM's eligibility and category rules. We help you understand what applies to your business.
Does GeM registration guarantee orders?
No. Registration puts you on the platform. Orders depend on your offering, your pricing and how well you meet each buyer's requirements.
What help do you provide for GeM?
We help with seller registration, profile setup, documentation and understanding the process. GeM itself decides approvals, categories and charges.
